"Really?" Thomas Craven eyed him interestedly. "And just what is your line of work, Julian?"

"My fiancée was being polite when she said I was taking a vacation,"

Julian replied dryly, slanting a glance at Anne. "Actually, I in unemployed at the moment. Want some help with the luggage?" He started out the door, not waiting for an answer. Dan Hargraves went to assist him.

"Are there just the two of you staying here, Miss Melton?" Craven asked politely as he stepped into the foyer.

"Just Julian and I and the housekeeper, Prue, who is only here during the days. You'll meet her shortly. She's out doing the grocery shopping.

Please call me Anne, by the way." Leading the way toward the staircase, she went on chattily, "The bedrooms are a little odd but rather interesting."

"Fascinating," Thomas Craven observed as he and Sara followed Anne up the staircase. "Your aunt has inherited some excellent art, Anne."

"Oh, you mean the Ballards and the Renfrews?" Anne said easily, glancing at the watercolors that lined the staircase. "Yes, they are rather nice if you like that sort of thing. I've never been too fond of them, myself."

Or else deciding whether or not to go to the bother of acquiring fakes to hang on the wall in place of the Ballard and Renfrew paintings, when the originals got themselves mysteriously stolen. Anne made a mental note to tell Julian that Craven had already shown an interest in the artwork.

Later that evening after dinner Craven helped himself liberally to the bottle of port in the living room and explained the procedure he and his companions would use to first detect the presence, as he called Carlota, and then remove her permanently. He was an excellent conversationalist, at ease with his audience, and in spite of what she knew about him Anne found herself listening intently to his stories. It was difficult to believe this was the man her brother had been trying to trap. For the first time Anne began to wonder if Michael might have been mistaken. But Lucy had said he was so sure it was Craven who had tried to get rid of him.

Uneasily Anne tried to sort through her impressions of the three ghost hunters as they all sat talking after dinner. When eventually Craven excused himself to go to bed she was no closer to any certainties than she had been earlier. In fact, she admitted to herself, she was beginning to feel very confused. Other than that Sara was definitely a bit
